Uber: Hello and welcome to the Perfectly Generic Podcast. What a special episode this is.

Chip: [Laughs]


Uber: So far there have only been English episodes. But now, recording this in Korean is very wild. It’s wild.

Chip: Absolutely.

Uber: I’m “Uber The Meh,” a Homestuck fan who will be hosting this episode, and I have here my guest, “Chip.” Would you like to introduce yourself?

Chip: [Laughs] Um… my nickname is Chip, and I am one of the fans who does Homestuck stuffs.

Uber: Yeah. For me I started reading Homestuck when I was in 1st? 2nd grade of middle school. So that would be 2014. ‘Cause the first update I saw was Game Over.

Chip: Ah, that.

Uber: Didn’t you also start reading it around then?

Chip: I think I started hearing about Homestuck around then too.

Uber: Yeah, yeah. So the updates kept coming, and I kept hanging around in the Korean fandom, and then after Friendsim came out, I started engaging with the fandoms overseas. So 2018.

Chip: Ah, I started reading Homestuck in 2015 before the Collide update. There was a lot of translated content back then so I started engaging with the fandom through Twitter, but I don’t think I engaged with fandoms in other countries.

Uber: That’s fair. You are mostly active in the Korean fandom, but you do talk to other English speaking Homestucks.

Chip: Recently, yeah.

Uber: Because of that you got a new nickname.

Chip: [Laughs]

Uber: It just somehow happened while we were chatting, but Chip is now called “The Korean Homestuck President.”

Chip: [Laughs] I have no idea how, but somehow I got into the very core of the Korean Homestuck fandom. Maybe because I was very active. So Uber gave me that nickname. And after that, everyone just started calling me that.

Uber: [Laughs]

Chip: So in return I gave you a nickname too. “The Homestuck Ambassador.”

Uber: [Laughs] I’m the Ambassador now. There are not a lot of people who engage with both the Korean and the North American fandom. There are some though.

Chip: Yeah.

Uber: But you know the atmosphere of the NA fandom. So when you compared it with the Korean fandom, how does it feel? What’s the difference?

Chip: So the NA fandom is more… They speak their mind very freely and there are a lot of spaces where you can discuss stuff. Korean Homestucks do speak their minds but I don’t think there is a space of discussion yet because the fandom is small in comparison. So people usually make artworks more. There are a lot of newbies in the fandom, so there are a lot less people who talk about the lore of Homestuck. I feel Korean fandom is very focused on creating fanarts and videos.

Uber: Absolutely. When you think about the Korean fandom, you think about people who creates a lot of fanarts. And they are gorgeous. There are a lot of good artists.

Chip:  They are. I think they express their minds through art works rather than through texts. So there are a lot less people who writes or creates fanfics. That is a bit disappointing but at least the do it with fanarts which is nice.

Uber: I also feel like, texts needs to be translated in order for other people to enjoy because of the language barrier. But for arts you can just go “Wow, that’s *chefs kiss* That’s my jam. I love it so much.”

Chip: [Laughs] Yeah, that’s the advantage. You can just look at an image and appreciate it with your perspective. It differs from person to person and I think that’s good.

Uber: Definitely. There are a lot of art works. But you know what else I’ve noticed?

Chip: What?

Uber: In comparison, there are not a lot of Korean Homestucks who does music.

Chip: Oh yeah. I really want to do music. But it is hard and difficult to manage these tools. You gotta have talent to make music and get ideas. As someone who majored in game design, I also learned sound design and it is so hard to make music. I do hope there were people who does music but as of now I don’t think there are any.

Uber: We should do it.

Chip: [Laughs] We?

Uber: Y'all may not know but there is a reason why Chip got the nickname “Korean Homestuck President.” This person blows your mind with all kinds of projects. It’s amazing. Let’s look at an example. I think last October? I went to a PgenPod Liveshow in Chapel hill. I met up with some fandom people, some writers, some friends.

Chip: I want to go too.

Uber: [Laughs] It is pretty fun. So I showed them the Korean Homestuck Illustration book and the Anthology book I participated in. I mean, art work is cool and all, but the fact that you can physically hold it in your hands was amazing. So what I’m getting at is that you have a similar project going on. Would you like to talk about it?

Chip: Let’s talk about a project I did rather than the one I’m working on. The calendar project. So I came back to Homestuck in 2019 and I know there is an official calendar they sell. But those calendars are supposed to be hung on a wall. And in Korea, we can’t do that because a lot of people rent their places.

Uber: Yeah, you can’t nail on walls.

Chip: So I wanted a desk calendar that you can put it on your workplace, school or on your desk. I couldn’t just wait for the official desk calendar to come out so I went “Screw it” and made it myself.  And a lot of people showed interest in it and participated. So I recieved their art, edited it to fit in a calendar and made the desk calendar. It was very satisfying and a lot of people wanted us to sell it.

Uber: It is very well made though.

Chip: But I still don’t have a good view on selling stuff. Who knows, Maybe I’ll sell it in 2021.

Uber: Everyone should be ready for this. Once Chip starts selling, the order is going to pile in.

Chip: [Laughs]

Uber: But yeah, I took a video of the calendar, uploaded on my twitter page and there are a lot of good arts in there. A lot of people participated in it.

Chip: Definetly.

Uber: It’s right here at my desk.

Chip: It’s over there for me. Right where I can see it.

Uber: March was my piece and I’m too embarrassed to look at mine.

Chip: Oh don’t be like that. There’s not many people who does 3D in Korea too.

Uber: That is true.

Chip: I liked that you worked on it. I think everyone would love it.

Uber: That would be nice. 3D is pretty interesting. Like, I do make figurines. Similar to your case, there was official beta kids figurines a while back, but there aren’t any now. So I thought “Might as well make it myself rather than wait.” So I bought a 3D printer and made a figurine. I’m still making it.

Chip: I think that’s how we all start, to be honest.

Uber: Yeah. Like, “If the official guys won’t do it, I will!”

Chip: Definitely.

Uber: Also, other stuffs that the officials won’t do! [Laughs]

Chip: Stuff they won’t do?

Uber: On the topic of non-official content, let’s talk about translation.

Chip: [Sighs] ...Translation. [Laughs] I wish that they would do translation of languages other than English. Not just Homestuck 2. A lot of translation happens in games, yeah? I hope that it was more active. There aren’t many people who are bilingual. But you could look into it and contact people in the foreign fandoms. There’s probably some big names in those fandoms. You could contact them and ask them “We want to advertise this game through translating it. Is anyone interested?” ‘Cause the language barrier is too high for us. We can’t understand because even a word differs from its useage or the feel of it and how people perceive it. So yeah, it would be nice if there was an official translation.

Uber: That would be ideal. There is a problem with the budget and figuring out how to hire people. So there are a lot of fans who datamine the codes and translate that. There is also this game called “Wandersong,” and what they did was very interesting. The devs actually opened their game script and let the users participate in this translation project if they wanted to. They gave us the resources they could give and the option for us to translate it while looking for a professional translation company themselves. So they weren’t just trying to get a free translation and I thought that was interesting.

Chip: I think that is a good way to do it. If the official affiliates mention some stuff about the translation, people will definitely contact them. It sucks that we’re not in that stage yet.

Uber: Yeah, it would be nice to have some kind of support to break the language barrier or to support the translation with the resources they can give. When I was translating Hiveswap Act 1, there was a Russian translation team. Among them, there was a person who could code stuff. So we contacted them and asked them if we could use the script they used to translated the game in Korean. They said yes and that’s how we made our translation patch.

Chip: Oh so that’s how it went down.

Uber: Yep. So if we could get a support from the devs about the method to decode the script, organize it for translation, and patch it back again, that would be grateful.

Chip: We would appreciate it even if they gave us just the script.

Uber: Absolutely.

Chip: There are even some stuff about translation that people upload on the internet.

Uber: Yeah.

Chip: Such a shame. I truly wish there was an official translation. Hussie visited Korea. I think it’s time.

Uber: [Laughs] Yeah and we are recording a podcast like this in Korean!

Chip: Exactly.

Uber: And there are some interactions going on between the Korean and the NA fandom nowadays.

Chip: Korea! It’s getting global! Going wide!

Uber: No longer just BTS!

Chip: [Laughs] Homestuck can do it! We can do it.

Uber: Homestuck can do it.

Chip: We definitely can.

Uber: That’s our 2020 logo, “Homestuck, we can do it.”

Chip: [Laughs]

Uber: A lot of big and small events happened last year in Korea. One of the recent and notable event was the “Toblerone incident.” I’m not sure if its right to say that Chip was in the middle of it but…

Chip: I think it is safe to say that I was.

Uber: [Laughs]

Chip: So I’ll tell the story from the beginning. So I saw Hussies post on Instagram and knew that he arrived in Korea. And I knew he would hide the Toblerones. I was at work then so I finished my job and found out that he posted a picture of the place that he hid the Toblerones. Where? At Banpo Han River Park! But the problem was not getting to the park. I knew he would hide the Toblerones. But for some reason he also hid postcards with his drawings on it. So that became an urgent matter.

Uber: And You are a huge Karkat stan.

Chip: [Laughs] I love Karkat so much. So at that point I just lost my sanity. I have to go. I have to get that.

Uber: I will regret it for the rest of my life if I don’t.

Chip: If I don’t get it I will become a ghost and haunt people forevermore. That’s what I felt. So I saw the distance between my place and the park and it took about an hour to get there by cab. I decided to stay up all night and started heading there. During that, one person actually found the Toblerone. I think they took the John postcard and a Toblerone but I don’t know what they wished for. They also uploaded some video of the place so I knew where I was supposed to go. But it was very early in the day so all the doors were closed. Even the package delivery people were waiting outside the door with me. So in that cold weather, I waited outside for the door to open and when it did, I ran faster than anyone else. I went there. I went to the hiding place and I found nothing. I thought I was going crazy. I stayed up all night to find the plastic bag to be not there. So I was getting very sensitive about this matter. I then tweeted out that there’s no bag here, because there were other people who were coming. So I told them that, and the whole Korean fandom just went wild. I just sat down somewhere near the river and watched the water flow, thinking about how I stayed up just to find nothing. When the sun came up, we started looking for it again just to see if we missed a spot. But we couldn’t find it. So we came up with 3 possible scenarios. One, someone with no conscience took the whole thing. Two, a cleaning lady thought it was trash and threw it away. ‘Cause it was kept in a plastic bag. Like the one they give out in convenience stores.

Uber: Yeah, like a trash bag.

Chip: And three, someone thought it belonged to someone else and gave it to a nearby shop owners for safe keeping. Those were the 3 hypothesis we came up with and my friend even searched the trash can. Just incase. But there was nothing there. We had work to do that day so we left the park and got some breakfast. While we were eating, someone uploaded a tweet saying that they found it. So I just… [Sighs] Personally, it was the most headache inducing event of 2019. I asked them how did they manage to find it? And apparently the second person who found the Toblerone bag was kicked out of the park by the security because it was almost closing time. So they had to take the whole thing. But they couldn’t tell us that since they didn’t have a twitter account. So I asked if the Karkat postcard was still there, and apparently someone already took it. At that point I just didn’t even had the strength to be angry. I just said,”Yeah okay. I hope people take what they want. It’s too tiring and frustrating for me to deal with.” But then, the fandom people had a discussion and they decided to give a Toblerone and a postcard of their choice to the people who came to the park earliest. Everyone agreed on that and I finally got my hands on the Karkat postcard.

Uber: There is a reason why they call you the President.

Chip: [Laughs] So I already used my Toblerone wish and the Karkat postcard is kept in a place where I can see clearly. I always smile when I look at that.

Uber: You should put it on a wall and bow towards it 3 time a day.

Chip: I can’t stop smiling when I look at him. I’m so happy.

Uber: I was in Canada, so I couldn’t see it directly myself. But the twitter feed was insane.

Chip: [Sighs] I even turned on the twitter live stream then. Everyone was excited about it. It was really disappointing when we found nothing. I thought like, “You shouldn’t do it like this!”

Uber: Of all places he hid it in a park that closes at night.

Chip: Exactly. If it was some kind of cafe or a shop, then I would have stopped by even if it meant I would be late for my work. But that wasn’t the case and this kind of event happened.

Uber: It could have gotten way worse but it turned out well.

Chip: Everyone knows that people went through all the hardship. We gotta look out for each other.

Uber: And people who could contact Hussie lend us a hand too.

Chip: Yeah, yeah.

Uber: When we received the message from them, we thought it was gone for good at that point. They asked us if there was any other better place to keep these. So we told them some locations like the manga store Booksaetong (Bustle) or the subway lockers. ‘Cause some celebrities actually put some gifts for the fans in the locker and let them find it, like heating pads and stuff.

Chip: Yeah. We do have a very active fandom culture so that would have been a better solution. But not a lot of foreign people know about these stuff so that was a shame.

Uber: And yeah, also Hussie thanked us for being very civil…

Chip: Wait, really?

Uber: Not directly. I think James relayed the message to us.

Chip: Oh! [Laughs] That makes me feel a bit proud.

Uber: It really did went well.

Chip: Yeah. People got what they wanted and acted very civil. Even though it was very early in the day. You know how us Koreans like to do stuff quickly.

Uber: Oh yeah definitely.

Chip: I stayed up all night, so it was around 4 to 5 am when I arrived. I think the cab driver might have wondered what this young lady would do at a Han River Park this early.

Uber: One of my twitter mutuals was like, “Where are they going this early in the morning?” “To Han river.” “WHY???”

Chip: [Laughs] They thought it was something detrimental. Something serious.

Uber: But no. It’s all Homestuck.

Chip: It’s because we’re all nerds. All of us are nerds.

Uber: We are nerds.

Chip: We are a people of combat. We had to be aggressive.

Uber: What kind of nerd would go to a Han River in the morning.

Chip: Here!

Uber: Just to receive a merch.

Chip: I think I payed 30 bucks for that merch.

Uber: [Laughs] It is pretty worth it though.

Chip: It really is. It’s priceless. I love it so much.

Uber: Let’s talk about some other Korean stuff. So like, the sub-culture in Korea is similar to NA in some parts, but there are also some unique stuffs too. For instance, NA has various conventions that’s being held in a large scale with booths and all that. We do have some stuff similar to that, like the 2.5D conventions. But there are also conventions that fans holds. Like the Undertale FanCon. I was in my last year of highschool when that happened but…

Chip: Ah, the last high schooler… So sad.

Uber: I wasn’t super invested in Undertale back then so I was at my art academy and doing my stuff when…

Chip: Toby Fox came.

Uber: Yeah, Toby Fox came. [Laughs]

Chip: I was really surprised. He is one of my favorite composers so I was a bit jealous. Back then I was just starting my adult life, so I was at work then. My reaction was “Wow… He actually came.”

Uber: I was jealous too.  But that aside, it felt very grateful that he acknowledged the Korean side of the fandom and came all the way here.

Chip: We find gratitude in those stuff. Just letting them know that we are here.

Uber: If a Homestuck FanCon was to be held, it would be ideal. But there are still some issues so it’s not possible yet. However Homestuck meetups does happen from time to time. I think those kind of culture is good too. It creates a new atmosphere.

Chip: Absolutely. I do have a lot to say about that. I love organizing events and meeting up with people to have conversations. So back in 2016, I held two small meetups to celebrate the ending of Homestuck. I also made some merch for the people to thank them for coming all this way and booked a small cafe to enjoy and chat about Homestuck. After that I was very busy with my college life so I couldn’t spend as much time as I did before until recently. And I think Korean fandom doesn’t like to sell merches and gain profit. They say that it’s allowed but It’s not very active.

Uber: Yeah, they still feel a bit nervous because there hasn’t been any official declaration.

Chip: They do feel a bit uneasy when there’s no official word about it. I think afraid is a good way to put it? So… you know I’m a pioneer. If I feel like it, I do it. So when I was talking to an old Homestuck friend of mine, we talked about how good it would be if there was a Homestuck FanCon. But that wasn’t realistically possible so we thought about a meetup in a smaller scale than a FanCon. And that was a Exchange Meetup. So we were like, “I wish there was one.” “Should we do it?” “Should we?” “Yeah! Let’s do it!”

Uber: Should we? Should we?

Chip: Yeah! That’s how it went down. So this August 1st, 2020, we are going to be holding an Exchange Meetup in Korea. We have the date set, but it is in August so the location is still undecided. But as soon as we do, we will be informing all participants. So, to explain what an Exchange Meetup is, rather than selling a merch, each person bring a self made merch for each participants and exchange it with them. We do that and chat or read the zines they made. Kinda like a small flea market.

Uber: There are merches other than zines, but it does kinda feel like a book club.

Chip: Kinda, yeah. That’s classy. Even though the topic is Homestuck.

Uber: Grab some black tea with some biscuits.

Chip: I’ll ready the tea.

Uber: It’s Homestuck, so it should be Faygo.

Chip: [Laughs] It’s hard to get Faygo here so I’ll get some Fanta instead.

Uber: Fanta and Sopor Pie.

Chip: Sopor Pie? It’s too hard to make a pie so I’ll make some tarts.

Uber: You know those slime things? Fill the pie with that.

Chip: No! People can’t eat it then!

Uber: For true authenticity.

Chip: So yeah I’m still preparing for that. But you have to make merches for the August event and there are people who can’t do that. The fandom is pretty small and I saw a lot of people who were disappointed. So in December, I’m planning to hold a Chatting Meetup. It is more free than the Exchange Meetup. We will be celebrating the kids birthdays, eat some cakes, and just chat about stuff freely.

Uber: It is good to see these Homestucks meeting up like this. It’s also pretty fun, chatting like that.

Chip: They’ll be like, my thoughts on this topic is like that, but their thoughts are different. Which then creates a whole new view on the subject. It is so much fun. I got a lot of good receptions when I held the two meetups. They loved the presents I made and I keep getting inspired by that feel.

Uber: Let’s talk about the merch in these kind of events. So people make stuff like zines, pin buttons, and even enamel pins.

Chip: Yeah. Like, Acrylic keyrings, stickers, and postcards are pretty common. Not only that but recently they also make stuff like smartphone grip sockets. I think the increased use of smartphones lead us to making more IT related merches.

Uber: Definitely. Like the electromagnetic shield stickers too.

Chip: You know I also made a vinyl merch. I gave one to Uber as a present.

Uber: Oh yeah that vinyl record, [Smacks lips] Mmm, mmm!

Chip: [Laughs] I’m so glad that you liked it.

Uber: It is really pretty. It really is.

Chip: It is for decoration only though. But there is another option that you can do. Instead of printing directly on the vinyl and covering the space, you can ask them to print it only on the middle and make it actually play some music. They will be printing it on a defective one so the music would be random. I thought that would be a good merch too. I also made a vinyl cover too. I only printed out the beta kids version, but I do have the art for the alpha kids so once I finish it we’re good to go.

Uber: When we get the money that is.

Chip: Yeah. Not just that but stuff like acrylic stands are also pretty.

Uber: You can make a variety of merches and people do make very creative stuff with it. Not just the Homestucks.

Chip: For instance, like the K-pop fandom. They make so many kinds of merches based on the idols. Like a plate with their faces on it. The trend nowadays is coasters. Since the retro aesthetic is popular here too, there are a lot of people who want to find some relaxation in their lives by taking time to drink some tea. They also make hotel key rings just because they look so pretty. Small dolls, wappen patches. There are so many platforms that you can make a variety of merches because of the active fandom culture. I think Korea is a really good country to nerd out.

Uber: Like in zines, people make board games and submit that too. I like Starwars, so I went to a Starwars FanCon a few years ago. And they sold self made newspapers that has some interviews of the official characters. And the theme was comedy so it was pretty funny. When I went there, they sold a new issue and all the other previous issues along with it and I thought that was very interesting.

Chip: Just wait for a moment. I’ll be making that too soon. I love it.

Uber: [Laughs] Did I just give you a new idea?

Chip: Wait for a bit and I’ll make it.

Uber: When you go to FanCons, they do sell a lot of merches. Have you been to the Cartoons FanCon?

Chip: Every time I try to go to those events, some personal stuff happens. So I usually organize it rather than participate in it.

Uber: Well. It’s not just the Cartoons one, but when you go to these FanCons, they sell like life scale drawings of characters and self made trading cards.

Chip: It really feels good when you collect them all. That moment when you get all the trading cards and flip it over to reveal the art is so good. They even give out prizes for that.

Uber: Yeah, and they hold events after they wrap up the booths like bingo or raffles.

Chip: Absolutely.

Uber: They do the raffle and give out official merches or self made merches. It’s interesting to see these diversity between FanCons.

Chip: Yeah, the build the theme around the subject and that leads into different types of stuff. It really makes you want to go to these cons.

Uber: I went to a Splatoon FanCon too. And there was a event being held while the others were selling merches. It was like, the staffs created a new lobby and we would play hide and seek. If you win, you get a prize. I thought it was very refreshing.

Chip: Oh that’s one way to do it. For our meetup, we can’t do event of those scale. But we will inform people later that we will be holding a small event where we give out merches to people who put a lot of time and effort into the zines since it is a hard process to make a book. And I also thought of making a Homestuck pop quiz paper.

Uber: Yeah, that’s also fun to do.

Chip: Our heads might explode while making that but… [Laughs] I think it’s gonna be fun. They’ll talk about how they got a question right or wrong and stuff.

Uber: It is pretty fun to mark the scores alongside with others.

Chip: Yeah, it’s gonna be fun.

Uber: Speaking of pop quizzes reminded me of my first FanCon. I know you watch it too but the Doctor Who FanCon was my first con experience.

Chip: Oh!! Doctor Who!

Uber: It really stuck with me since it was not only my first FanCon, but also my first time at Seoul by myself. It was held in some kind of auditorium and as soon as I went in, I heard “This is Gallifrey.”

Chip: Wow!

Uber: That music was playing and you know how there’s this feel of grand scale in that music. Like, [Sings the melody]. It was… amazing.

Chip: I thought about that too. I will be blasting homestuck music so everyone who enters will hear it. [Laughs] I love it!

Uber: [Laughs] Decorate the door to make it look like the Sburb logo.

Chip: I should put up some posters.

Uber: [Laughs] There’s so many ideas, but hard to make it come true.

Chip: Yeah, the problem is time and money. There are not a lot of hands that can help us. So if I ever get to meet Andrew, I want to ask him If I could hold a FanCon or an event of that scale. If he says yes, then I’m definitely down to make it a reality. Maybe not as big as a FanCon, but something a bit smaller. We’re absolutely going to do the Livescale character drawing auction though. Is there something similar like that in NA?

Uber: I’m not sure. I haven’t been to a lot of cons in NA. But I do think there do sell something similar in booths.

Chip: Here in Korea, If there is an information about the characters height like, if its 186cm, then we make the drawing that big.

Uber: Exactly 1:1 scale.

Chip: Yeah, I love that so much. I really want to make it and look at it. I might not be able to get it but I am willing to bid the highest price like, a 1000 dollars!

Uber: [Laughs] 300 bucks is the limit ma’am

Chip: No 1000 dollars… 300 is not going to be enough… It has to be at least 2000.

Uber: [Laughs] Just sell a house why don’t you.

Chip: Yeah why not! [Laughs] I’ll get a loan!

Uber: [Laughs] The good thing about FanCons is that the scale of the event can differ from con to con. Like the VALVe FanCon was held in a room that was no bigger than a classroom. And for the Cartoon FanCon, they booked two floors of a building for the day. It was huge. It is good that people can organize it even if the fandom is not that big. Fans are creative.

Chip: Yes. I am so very proud of the fans who creates merches just for the sake of nerding out.

Uber: [Laughs] Such a president way to say it…

Chip: [Laughs] Well I was being serious.

Uber: My fellow Homestucks…

Chip: [Laughs] I’ll be collecting taxes.

Uber: [Laughs] You gotta get taxes if you are a president.

Chip: Yep. I’m collecting taxes and if you are curious where these tax monies are used, you’ll find out soon.

Uber: Instead of paying you with money, how about daily Karkat pics?

Chip: Ah, that would be enough.

Uber: So we talked about the fandom, we talked about the fans. Let’s talk about some official, well, quote unquote official stuffs. So there’s Hiveswap, Friendsim, Pesterquest, all these kinds of Homestuck contents are pouring out right now.

Chip: Yep.

Uber: And there’s been a boom of Homestuck renaissance since the release of Friendsim. What are your thoughts on these contents and what do you hope for the future? Let’s talk about the Homestuck future.

Chip: [Laughs] Homestuck 2 and Homestuck future. Sounds like a title for an academic paper.

Uber: [Laughs]

Chip: So there weren’t any news about Homestuck when I came back. The Ending and the Epilogues came out at that point. And when I searched some reactions to the epilogues, it wasn’t very positive. The story was pretty shocking.

Uber: It was. Even the NA fandom was divided too.

Chip: So I didn’t read the Epilogues. And then Pesterquest came out. I knew at that moment that I will be selling my soul to Homestuck again. [Laughs] Not only that but people who I hung out with during the Homestuck Ending came back too. I mean, we walked a long path with these kids. Spending your school life with them and all. The fact that a game about these kids was being made was so welcoming.

Uber: It’s good.

Chip: New info and stories,

Uber: New contents basically.

Chip: So I’m very happy that Pesterquest is a thing. I love the atmosphere of it and we all go crazy when each character comes out. It’s insane. And not only that, there was this news about Hiveswap Act 2 coming out.

Uber: Yeah.

Chip: I don’t really talk about Hiveswap that much but when they announced Act 2, Joeys self-claimed aunts started coming out. [Laughs] Just calling out for Joey and all. So I also have positive view on that too. I’m not sure about Friendsim though. Not a lot of people talk about Friendsim now, but people who played it does talk about it time to time so I think that’s good too.

Uber: Absolutely.

Chip: The problem is Homestuck 2.

Uber: Ah, Homestuck 2.

Chip: Considering that the opinions about this is divided into two groups, I think it’s the same with Korean Homestucks. Do I accept HS2 or not? For me I want to accept it.

Uber: Hm.

Chip: Because, since it’s a continuation of the epilogues, there are a lot of heartbreaking elements. Some stuffs are hard to take it in. The characters are not in a good place at the moment so some new readers are having a hard time. Like, maybe it is a bit too much. For those who accept HS2, they think it is pretty reasonable for the characters to act that way. I do agree on that too. A person can’t always be right all the time. So I think it reasonable to view these people as those who are getting used to HS2 and those who can’t. It can only be described as “There are some stuff to talk about” when it comes to HS2. Just “Stuff to talk about.”

Uber: Yeah.

Chip: It does get a bit hectic when we talk about HS2.

Uber: Definitely. I do think that the Epilogues and HS2 is not for everyone. There are some stuff that people may feel uncomfortable with. So in the case of Epilogues, there is a content warning at the beginning to let people know if they don’t want to read it, they can. And now it’s the era of optional canons. Canon is plural and we should accept that. If you want the story of these kids to end at act 7 or at the Credits, then sure. There are a lot of stuff to talk about this topic but I do try to stay positive. I will admit that HS2 and the Epilogues was kinda shocking. I did wish for the Epilogues to tie the loose ends and leave it at that.

Chip: Mm hm.

Uber: But it didn’t so I was disappointed at first. But when I do think about it, it is a well made content and since HS2 is a thing, I think it is a matter of time to look at these content a bit more optimistically.

Chip: It really is a matter of time. We just need the time to chew and swallow. I was pretty distraught a few days ago, thinking like, “Do I really like this?” But I talked with you and I think I’m at the stage of acceptance. These types of content will keep on coming with these kids who grew up.

Uber: Yeah.

Chip: Not everything always goes right in an adults life. It’s like ours. We can’t always be happy.

Uber: Mm hmm.

Chip: And I think that’s the same for these kids too. Different in scale though. So I’m trying to look at HS2 in a more positive manner. There are a lot of people who feel lost when reading HS2. But I do think it is a matter of time until they accept it or just end the story at Act 7. It’s their choice.

Uber: That’s right.

Chip: The atmosphere is not getting worse. We are just… heart broken.

Uber: Just need some time to heal.

Chip: We do need time for these lovely kids. We do cherish them and we feel sad for them too.

Uber: Yeah. It’s like this, Homestuck is your ex and they are trying to come back. But you feel uneasy. You did have a good time with them but it still feels a bit weird.

Chip: [Laughs] Definitely. It does feel like that. Someone said that looking at their favs makes them feel like they are stalking their ex’s Instagram.

Uber: [Laughs]

Chip: Kinda like, “You are doing well without me huh.”

Uber: When you look at HS2 or the Epilogues, it talks about more mature topics compared to Homestuck. And people feel like, “Why do we have to hear about realistic problems when we came for entertainment?” That is reasonable considering how the world is on fire right now.

Chip: [Laughs] I see those kinds of attitudes from fans who stuck around since way back when. Newbies are a bit more, “Oh… oh wow… um…”

Uber: Yeah. There is a sense of “Seriously?” kinda vibe. But there are people who feel at ease when they talk about realistic problems like depression. They feel like they are not alone. It creates some sort of common ground.

Chip: Oh, that’s an interesting way to view it.

Uber: Yeah. It really is a good topic to think about.

Chip: Definitely. Like conversation about gender identity is good. It’s about accepting Homestuck itself, but not the topics they deal with.

Uber: Some weird people might say it's forced diversity. But it is still inclusion. And if it could help the society to view these minorities in a better way, what’s the reason not to do it?

Chip: Definitely.

Uber: As long as you don’t mock or discriminate them, it is good to write about minorities.

Chip: Yeah. A lot of things changed. Homestuck 1 felt like it was fiction. It’s not realistic. In Homestuck 2, the characters who came out of the canon universe are living an actual life and that feels real. We thought Homestuck as a method of escapism. But these kids are living in a society, dealing with problems. And that’s good, it’s just frustrating.

Uber: Homestuck 2… Homestuck future… Let’s see where it goes from here and prepare ourselves.

Chip: It not like we can control these kids and conclude it the way we like it. I can’t even control my life! I think it is best for us to see how it goes and congratulate if it goes well, or support them if it doesn’t.

Uber: That’s a good way to put it. Congratulate if it goes well, or support them if it doesn’t.

Chip: Damn, I made a memorable quote! [Laughs]

Uber: Hell yeah!

Chip: [Laughs] What a president thing to do!

Uber: Boy oh boy Ms. President! You did it again!

Uber: 413. Do you want anything? It is Homestuck Christmas after all.

Chip: Yeah. It really is a Homestuck Christmas. Yay! In Korea, it’s more of a traditional holiday than a Christmas. 413… new content… I think Hiveswap Act 2 would be appropriate.

Uber: Same.

Uber: Exactly. [Laughs] We both major in video games so we know how hard it is to make a game.

Chip: It’s so hard.

Uber: We support all the devs of Hiveswap Act 2.

Chip: Yeah.

Uber: And we are so excited for it.

Chip: Well… You can’t hear or understand it but [Laughs] We do appreciate all your hard work. There are a lot of people who knows about games and we support all of you. ‘Cause we know how hard it is.

Uber: Yeah. Not just the game but the artworks and the animations are like, [Smacks lips] so good. It looks so good.

Uber: Our Joey, Our Xefros.

Chip: Ah…

Uber: I hope they release the Bard Quest Remake for this 413. [Laughs]

Chip: Oh…

Uber: [Laughs] Last 413, I made this fake content leak photo and uploaded it on twitter. One of them was Bard Quest Remake and the other one was a Hiveswap Wii-U port. But the Switch came out at that point so people were like, “Why Wii-U?” And some people actually believed it.

Chip: [Laughs] No, don’t fall for it!

Uber: Don’t fall for it. Please. It’s intended to look fake.

Chip: There was also Homestuck Netflix too. [Laughs]

Uber: Yeah, Homestuck Netflix.

Chip: I hope that never comes to reality. Please. Please don’t make it happen. But not just that, I hope they do something with the merches too.

Uber: Yeah.

Chip: When was it. It was during the Ending so, 2016?

Uber: Yep.

Chip: They released a random box then. There was a picture of John on the inside. I bought that. [Sighs] I wish that was a thing again. It is 2020 after all. It’s a special year.

Uber: Something Special.

Chip: I really hope there was another random box this year. There’s not a lot of places you can make diverse kinds of merches. It’s a bit dull.

Uber: Hmm.

Chip: It’s just the same thing with different pictures.

Uber: Yeah.

Chip: So it is kinda disappointing. I will buy them if they do a sale this 413. But I really hope they make a variety of merches.

Uber: Official merches..

Chip: Yep.

Uber: Fans do make merches. But if it’s official, it feels different.

Chip: Yeah. That’s why I’m making all these merches. In hopes of that the official would one day make more diverse stuffs.

Uber: It’s not that the official merches are better in quality. But there is this feel to it. It’s all about that feel.

Chip: Yeah. It’s all about that tag.

Uber: Yeah. [Laughs]

Chip: The whole point is the tag.

Uber: [Laughs] Just the tag.

Chip: That is the core. It really is not about the quality of stuffs. My mindset is like, “If it’s official, I’ll buy it.” That’s why I bought the Epilogues book when it came out. I cherish it. I even bought all the Homestuck books too.

Uber: [Laughs] Really.

Chip: I flexed a bit.

Uber: Flex.

Chip: I really did flex. So I’m just waiting for that. More diverse merches.

Uber: Let’s move on to a different topic. What kind of segue is this?

Chip: [Laughs] It’s unavoidable. It’s our first time.

Uber: Different topic! Different topic!

Chip: Okay!

Uber: [Laughs] Homestuck Korean Dub. We tried to make it happen but there weren’t enough participants. So it’s a indefinite postponed project.

Chip: Yeah. Postponed. I really want to make this happen. Because there are a lot of Let’s read Homestucks out there since there’s a lot of scripts.

Uber: Yeah.

Chip: But it is good that these exists. Just listening to these voices of all these characters. But it’s in English.

Uber: [Laughs]

Chip: We can’t understand it.

Uber: Well, I can. It’s only you who can’t understand it.

Chip: Silence. I can’t.

Uber: [Laughs]

Chip: [Laughs] If the president can’t understand, no one can. So I just listen to the voices. Like, I can understand basic grammar but when it comes to complex stuff like Rose and Kanaya, I just go, “What the heck is this…” So I really hope the Korean dub becomes a thing.

Uber: Hmm.

Chip: We got a lot of good reception. But there aren’t enough people. That’s the problem.

Uber: The fandom is pretty small.

Chip: Yeah. If it was in Korean it would be “Homestuck Read!” rather than “Let’s read Homestuck.”

Uber: Exactly. “Homestuck Read.”

Chip: I do hope it was active more. If we do it here in Korea, I think a lot of foreign people would be interested in it too. If they do, there’s gonna be more interactions with people from overseas. It’s disappointing that the fandom here is too small.

Uber: Not only the dub, but it is fun to translate English content into Korean. You can express your creativity in that too.

Chip: It really is. It’s fun.

Uber: It’s fun, it’s creative. It’s the people that’s the problem. The people.

Chip: No, [Laughs] No.

Uber: There are no people.

Chip: Not just that, but also if we actually do it, we should take 3~4 characters per person.

Uber: Exactly. With changing voices and whatnot.

Chip: How do we even do that? We’re not even professional voice actors.

Uber: Yeah.

Chip: But if we do, I want to try out Jade. I think we have a similar voice tone.

Uber: You would fit in nicely.

Chip: Hehehehehe [Laughs]

Chip: [Laughs] It’s such a shame.

Uber: We talked about this a while ago but there are people who uploaded clips of them recording Homestuck lines. And they are so good.

Chip: It’s so good.

Uber: Yeah.

Chip: I feel like we can do this. But we all got our personal lives.

Chip: It’s hard to schedule it. Such a shame.

Uber: Well, we’ll find a way.

Chip: Yeah. Just set a deadline and let them send the voice lines ‘n stuff.

Uber: Definitely. One day it will come back in some shape or form.

Chip: [웃음] 어… 닉네임은 칩이라고 하구요, 한국에서 홈스턱에 관련된 활동을 하고있는 팬 중 한 명입니다.

Uber: 그죠. 홈스턱을 이제 저는 한 중학교 1학년? 2학년 그때 쯤 팠으니까 2014년. 그 제가 맨 처음으로 본 업데이트가 게임오버였어요.

Chip: 아, 그때.

Uber: 칩님도 그때 비슷하게 들어오지 않았나요?

Chip: 저도 그냥 가볍게 홈스턱의 존재를 알게된 때가 그때쯤 인 것 같아요.

Uber: 그죠 그죠, 그러고 업데이트 계속 나오고 한국 팬덤에서 계속 활동 하다가 트위터로 옮기면서 프렌드심 나오고 나서 해외 팬덤이랑 교류를 하게 된 것 같아요, 2018년때.

Chip: 아, 저는 본격적으로 발 들이기 시작한게 2015년때였는데, 콜라이드 업데이트 전이죠. 그때는 이제 번역이 많이 나온 상태여서 트위터에서 많이 활동하던 상태여가지고 자연스럽게 팬덤으로 들어왔는데, 해외랑은 교류가 좀 없었던것 같기도 해요.

Uber: 그죠, 이제 칩님은 한국팬덤에서 많이 활동 하시고. 해외팬덤이랑 교류도 하시잖아요.

Chip: 최근에는 이제 조금씩 교류 하기도 하죠, 네.

Uber: 그래서 붙은 별명이 있어요, 칩님한테.

Chip: [웃음]

Uber: 그냥 떠들다가 나온건데, 이제 칩님이 “코리안 홈스턱 프레지던트”라고…

Chip: [웃음] 이게 저도 모르겠는데, 어느샌가 홈스턱 한국 팬덤에 약간 중심에 들어가게 된 것 같아요, 열심히 활동을 하다 보니까. 그래가지고 우버님이 장난스레 지어준 별명인데 모두가 그렇게 불러주시고 계시더라구요.

Uber: [웃음]

Chip: 그래서 저도 우버님한테 별명 지어 드렸잖아요. 홈스턱 외교관이라고.

Uber: [웃음] 저는 외교관. 그나마 이 홈스턱 한국 팬덤에서 해외팬덤이랑 둘다 교류하는 분들이 많은편은 아니긴 한데, 그래도 꽤 있긴 해기자고.

Chip: 그쵸.

Uber: 그래도 어느정도 해외팬덤 분위기 같은것도 알고, 대충 아시잖아요, 홈스턱 한국이랑 해외랑 한번 비교해 봤을때 어떤 것 같아요?

Chip: 일단 해외는 뭐라고 해야될까, 자신의 생각 같은걸 자유롭고 되게 많은 토론을 하는 장이 많은 것 같아요. 근데 한국은 아직까지 자기 생각에 대해서 말씀은 하시지만, 외국만큼 토론의 장이라는게 생기는것 같지는 않고 오히려 한국은 해외보단 팬덤의 크기가 작잖아요. 그래서 아트워크를 조금 더 활동하는 분들이 많고, 설정에 대해서 생각을 하시는 분들이, 아직까지는 뉴비분들이 점점 늘어나는 추세라, 그런쪽은 최근엔 좀 적은 것 같아요. 그래서 대부분 팬아트나 뭐, 영상 제작이라던가, 그런쪽으로 활동하는 분위기가 많은 것 같아요, 한국은.

Uber: 그쵸, 한국 팬덤을 딱 생각 해 봤을 때 떠오르는게, 팬아트를 많이 만드는데 솔직히 잘 만들긴 해요. 진짜 존잘분들이 꽤 있어.

Chip: 잘그려요, 사람들이. 근데 자신의 생각을 아트워크로 담아내는 것 같아요, 텍스트가 아닌. 그래서 글로서 소설이나 글로서 뭔가 만들어 내는 부류가 적은 것 같긴 해요. 그게 조금 아쉽긴 한데 그래도 뭐, 그림으로 자신의 생각을 표현 해주시니 얼마나 좋아요.

Uber: 또 확실히 느낀게 글 같은 경우에는 번역을 해야되잖아요, 여러사람들이 즐기려면. 언어의 장벽이 있으니까. 근데 그림 같은 경우에는 딱 보고서 “야 저거, *쪽* 쉐프 키스 너무좋다. 딱 내 취향이다”

Chip: [웃음] 그죠 그게 너무 좋은 것 같아요. 이미지라는게 한번에 눈에 들어오고, 인식이 되고, 사람마다 바라보는 관점이나 해석도 다르잖아요. 그게 저는 좋은 것 같아요.

Uber: 그죠, 확실히 아트워크가 많긴 한데, 또 제가 느낀게 뭔지 알아요?

Chip: 뭐에요?

Uber: 일단 비교해서 봤을때, 한국 아트워크중에서 음악을 중점으로 하시는 분들이 그렇게 많진 않더라구요.

Chip: 아, 맞아요. 저 진짜 음악을 너무 하고싶은데, 작곡이라던가 이러한 툴을 다루는게 굉장히 힘들잖아요. 어렵기도 하고, 재능이 있어야 뭐, 음악을 만들어 내고 영감을 받고 그럴건데, 저도 게임 전공을 했던 사람으로서 사운드 관련 해서도 배웠는데, 음악을 만들어 내는거 너무 어렵더라구요. 그래서 음악을 하시는 분들이 계시면 좋겠지만, 아직까지는 없는것 같은 상황인 것 같네요.

Uber: 이제 또 저희가 하면 돼요.

Chip: [웃음] 제가요?

Uber: 지금 모르시는 분들이 있는데 칩님한테 괜히 프레지던트라는 별명이 붙은게 아니에요. 이 사람이 프로젝트를 진짜… 마인드 블로우. 개쩔게 해요. 하나만 예시로 들어봅시다. 제가 PgenPod 라이브쇼를 작년에 10월이었나? 채플힐에 가서 팬덤 분들이랑 많이 교류를 했어요. 홈스턱 2 제작진 분들도 만나고, 친구들도 만나고.

Chip: 아, 나도 가고싶어

Uber: [웃음] 재미 있죠. 그러면서 제가 참여했었던 한국 홈스턱 일러북이랑 앤솔을 딱 보여드렸어요. 뭐 아트워크도 아트워크지만, 피지컬로 뽑아내는게 일단 보기가 좋죠, 손에 들 수 있다는거 자체가. 신기한 것 같아요. 그거랑 또 비슷하게 지금 칩님이 하시고 있는 프로젝트가 하나 있잖아요. 그거에 대해서 한번 얘기를 해보시겠어요?

Chip: 지금 진행하는거 말구 한번 전에 진행했었던거 말을 해보도록 합시다. 프로젝트가 끝났던 달력에 대해서. 제가 2019년에 홈스턱에 다시 열렬하게 빠지게 되었는데, 공식  굿즈에서도 달력이 나오긴 하잖아요. 그거는 이제 벽에거는 것 밖에 없단 말이에요. 한국의 경우에는 벽에 걸수가 없잖아요, 집을 빌리는 상황도 많고, 자기 집이 아니다보니까.

Uber: 그죠, 못을 박을 수가 없으니까.

Chip: 그래서 회사나, 학교나, 자기 책상이나 간단하게 둘 수 있는 탁상 달력을 너무 가지고싶었어요. 공식을 기다리기엔 마냥 너무 오래 걸리고. 그럴 바에는 내가 만드는게 낫겠다 해서 홧김에 저질러 버린거긴 한데, 그래도 많은 분들이 관심을 주셔가지고, 참여 해주시고, 이제 참가자 분들의 그림을 받아서 재가 편집을 해가지고, 탁상 달력을 제작을 하게 되었거든요. 그래서 꽤 만족스럽게 나왔고, 이제 판매를 해달라는 분들이 꽤나 나왔어요.

Uber: 진짜 예쁘게 뽑긴 했어요.

Chip: 근데 저는 아직까진 판매에 대한 좋은 시선이 없기 때문에, 아직까지는 그런데, 2021년엔 뭐 할수도 있을 것 같고. 그렇습니다.

Uber: 이제 다들 기대하고 있어야 돼. 칩님 달력 파는 순간 막 들어온다.

Chip: [웃음]

Uber: 근데 제가 또 트위터 제 페이지에 달력 찍어서 올리기도 했는데 진짜 예쁜 아트워크 굉장히 많아요. 정말 많은 분들이 참여해주시고.

Chip: 그쵸.

Uber: 지금 여기 바로 책상 옆에도 있고.

Chip: 저도 저기 제가 바라보는곳에 있어요.

Uber: 3월은 제가 맡은건데 제거는 부끄러워서 못 봐요.

Chip: 아 왜요. 저는 그래도 한국 내에서도 3D를 다루시는분들이 그렇게 없잖아요.

Uber: 그렇긴 하죠.

Chip: 저는 우버님이 작업을 해주셔서 저는 좋았어요. 다들 마음에 들어 하실 것 같은데?

Uber: 그건 좋네요. 확실히 3D 흥미로운 것 같아요. 제가 또 피규어를 만들잖아요. 약간 칩님이랑 비슷하게 공식적으로 나오는 피규어가 뭐, 베타키즈 예전에 있었고, 지금은 없으니까. 그냥 기다리는바에 내가 직접 만들겠다 해서 만든게, 이제 3D 프린터 사가지고 이렇게 만들고 있네요.

Chip: 다들 그렇게 시작하는 것 같아요, 솔직히.

Uber: 그죠, 공식이 안해주니까 내가 직접 만들어야겠다 하면서.

Chip: 그쵸.

Uber: 또, 공식이 안 해주는거! [웃음]

Chip: 공식이 안 해 주는거요?

Uber: 공식이 안 해주는거 말 나온김에 한번 번역에 대해서 얘기를 해봅시다.

Chip: 하… 번역 [웃음] 이게 공식에서도 영어 뿐만이 아니라 이제 사용자가 많은 국가의 언어를 번역을 진행해줬으면 좋겠어요. 홈스턱 2에만 해당하는게 아니라, 대부분의 번역은 게임에서 자주 이루어지잖아요. 그것이 활성화 되었으면 좋겠어요. 두 가지 언어가 가능한 사람들이 많지는 않지만, 그래도 관심을 가져서, 아니면 한국 팬덤에 있는 분들에게 컨택을 할 수도 있는거고, 아니면, 그 나라에서 네임드가 있을 거 아니에요. 그런분들에게도 연락을 해서, 홍보 차원으로 번역을 하고싶다, 진행을 해볼 사람이 있나 모집을 해서, 게임 내에서라도 번역이 진행이 되었으면 좋겠어요. 저희는 언어의 장벽이 너무 커서 못 알아 듣잖아요. 하나의 단어라도 쓰는 상황이 다르고, 어감이 다르고,저희는 받아들이는게 아예 다르니까, 또 거기에 대해서 해외와 저희 나라의 생각하는게 다르잖아요? 그래서 저는 공식에서 번역을 진행을 해줬으면 좋겠어요. 제 생각은.

Uber: 확실히 그러면 이상적이긴 하죠. 약간 문제가 이제 금전적인 문제도 있고, 이걸 어떻게 고용을 해서 할건지도 문제고. 그래서 한국에서 팬들이 그냥 코드를 뜯어가지고 번역을 하는 경우도 있고, 그렇긴 한데, 제가 플레이 했었던 게임중에서 “완더송”이라는 게임이 있었거든요. 근데 얘네가 한게 확실히 흥미롭더라구요, 게임 개발자들이. 일단 게임 스크립트를 열어 놓고, 유저들이 참여하고 싶으면 참여 할 수 있게 스크립트를 열어 놓은거에요. 자기가 줄 수 있는 리소스들을 제공 해 주고, 너희가 번역을 하고 싶으면 번역을 해라. 일단 그러면서 또 자기들이 전문적인 번역 팀도 고려를 하고 있다. 그러면서 괜히 이런 무료 번역 떼어먹으려는것도 아니기도 하고. 저는 그게 굉장히 흥미롭다고 생각했어요.

Chip: 되게 좋은 방법인 것 같아요, 그것도. 공식에서 언급을 해주면 분명히 관심 있는 사람이 연락을 해 줄건데, 아직까지는 그렇게 이루어지지 않는게 조금 아쉽네요.

Uber: 그죠, 약간 제공해 줄 수 있는 자원 한에서 언어의 장벽을 깰 수 있는, 아니면 번역을 서포트 할 수 있는 그런 행위를 해주면 참 고마울 것 같아요. 제가 하이브스왑 액트 1을 번역을 할때는 러시아 번역 팀이 있었거든요. 그 분들 중에서 코딩을 하시는 분들이 있어가지고, 컨택을 해서 너희가 번역 할때 쓴 스크립트를 우리가 한국어 번역 할때 써도 되냐 허락을 받고 거기서 번역을 해서 패치를 만든거거든요.

Chip: 아 그렇게 된거구나.

Uber: 네네. 그래서 스크립트를 뜯고, 번역할 수 있게 정리를 해놓고, 패치할 수 있는 그런 방법을 알려주고 제공 해 주면 그것 만이라도 고마울 것 같죠.

Chip: 스크립트라도 주면 저희야 감사하죠.

Uber: 그죠그죠.

Chip: 인터넷에 찾아보면 게임을 좋아하는 사람들이 그런 방법들을 설명 해 놓은 글이 있을거니까.

Uber: 그죠.

Chip: 아쉽습니다, 공식에서 제발, 제발 번역이 되었으면 좋겠어요. 허씨도 한국에 왔잖아요. 그럴 때가 되었어요

Uber: [웃음] 그리고 지금 이렇게 한국어로 녹음을 하고 있잖아요.

Chip: 그니까요.

Uber: 이제 해외 팬덤이랑 항국 팬덤이랑 어느정도 이어지려는 접점이 있으니까.

Chip: 이제 한국 글로벌적으로 가는거에요! 해외로 나아가는 거에요!

Uber: 한국 홈스턱에서 많은 일들이 있었죠, 작고 크고. 그나마 최근에 일어나고 연관 있을법한 얘기가, “토블론 사건.” 칩님이 중점에 있다고 하긴 그렇지만, 굉장히 그런…

Chip: 솔직히 중심에 있다고 하는게 맞는 것 같아요.

Uber: [웃음]

Chip: 제가 처음부터 말씀을 드릴게요. 허씨가 인스타에 한국에 왔다고 업로드를 한걸 보고 한국에 왔다는걸 인지를 하고 있었어요. 그리고 토블론을 숨길것도 예상을 하고 있었어요. 그래서 저는 근무자니까 회사 근무 끝내고 인스타를 보니까 숨겼다는 사진과 위치 같은것을 알려줬더라구요. 어디에? 반포 한강공원에! 근데 문제는 반포 한강 공원에 가는게 문제가 아니었어요. 토블론을 숨기는건 알고 있었는데, 어떠한 이유인지 모르겠지만 한국에 자신이 직접 그림을 그려놓은 엽서까지 숨겨두고 갔잖아요. 엄청 다급해지죠.

Uber: 그리고 칩님이 카르캣 쳐돌이잖아.

Chip: [웃음] 저 카르캣 너무 사랑하잖아요! 그래서 저는 그때부터 이성이 탁 끊긴 거예요. 나는 가야만 한다. 나는 저걸 얻어야만 한다.

Uber: 이거 못 얻으면 평생 후회한다.

Chip: 이걸 안 얻으면 평생에 한이 생겨서 이승을 떠돌아다니는 귀신이 될거야. 진짜 그렇게 될 것 같은거에요. 그래서 거리를 따져보니까 거주하는데에서 한 한시간 택시를 타고 갈만한 곳이어서, 갈만하다 생각을 해가지고 밤을 새서 가게 되었는데, 이제 밤을 새는 동안에, 토블론을 맨 처음으로 발견한 사람이 나왔어요. 그분은 이제 존 엽서랑 토블론을 같이 들고 가신 것 같은데 어떤 소원을 빌었는지는 잘 모르겠더라구요. 뭐 장소랑 영상같은 것도 업로드 해주셔서 이제 그 장소를 딱 인지를 하고 밤 새서 택시타고 갔어요. 근데 그 시간에 공원에 문도 열려 있지가 않은 엄청 이른 시간이었어요. 택배 해주시는 아저씨들도 기다리고 있는 상황이었던 거에요. 저는 그 추운 날에 이제 기다리면서 문이 열리길 기다렸고, 문이 열려서 누구보다 빨리 후다닥 달려갔어요. 갔어요. 숨긴 장소에 갔어요. 봉투가 없어요. 진짜 미치고 팔짝 뛰겠어요. 아니, 밤도 샜고, 봉투도 없고. 밤을 샜으니까 사람이 예민해 질 수 밖에 없는 거에요. 그래서 일단 빨리 트위터에 글을 올렸어요. 왜냐하면 찾으러 오시는 분들이 저 말고도 많이 있었으니까. 그래서 장소에 없다, 그걸 알려드리고 이제 한국 팬덤이 혼돈에 빠졌어요. 그래서 저는 허망하게 한강의 물을 바라보고 있었어요. 아… 내가 이러려고 밤을 샜나. 그런 생각이 드는거에요. 그래서 시간이 좀 지나고 찾으러 오시는 몇몇 분들이랑 함깨 찾아 다니고 그랬는데, 날이 밝아지고 그래서. 근데 안보이는거에요. 그래서 총 세가지 설이 나왔어요. 첫번째는 양심 없는 사람이 다 들고 갔다. 그리고 두번째는 환경 미화원이 쓰레기 인 줄 알고 버렸다. 왜냐하면 그냥 봉투에 들어있었거든요, 편의점 봉투에.

Uber: 그니까. 진짜 쓰레기 봉투같은.

Chip: 그리고 세번째는 누가 주웠는데 두고간 짐 인 줄 알고 어느 근처 편의점이라던가 그런데 맡겼다. 그런 세가지 설이 나왔어요. 그래서 제 친구는 모든걸 무릎쓰고 쓰레기통도 뒤져봤어요, 혹시나 해서. 근데 없었어요. 그래서 저희는 이게 뭐 하는 짓인가 하고 있었거든요. 근데 시간이 계속 지나고 저는 그 날도 출근 해야하는 날이어서 한강 공원을 떠나게 되었고, 아침밥을 먹고 있던 중에, 트위터에 찾았다는 글이 하나 올라오는거에요. 그래서 저는… [한숨] 2019년에서 제일 머리가 제일 아팠던 사건이거든요. 그래서 아… 뭐지? 하고 어떻게 찾으셨어요 하고 물어봤어요. 이게 어떻게 된 경위냐면, 이제 첫번째 찾으셨던분 다음으로 토블론을 찾으러 오신 분이 있었어요. 그래서 그걸 발견 했는데, 경비원분이 공원 문 닫을 시간이다, 나가라, 그래서 그 봉투 자체를 아예 들고가신거에요. 근데 그 소식을 저희한테 알려주질 못하셨던거지. 그래서 저는 다급하게 카르캣 남아있나요? 했는데 다른분이 가지고 가셨다 하는거에요. 거기서 정말 화에 대한 이성도 탁 끊겼어요. 진짜로. 그래서 출근을 하면서, 그래요, 갖고싶은 분들 갖고 가시고 저는 진짜 너무 힘들고 지치고 그러네요 말을 했는데, 타임라인에 계셨던 한국 팬덤 분들이 모두가 이야기를 나눴어요. 초반에 도착했던 사람들에게 토블론이랑 원하는 엽서를 드리도록 하자. 이런 의견이 나오고 모두가 의견을 받아들여서 양보를 해주셔가지고 토블론이랑 카르캣 엽서를 결국 얻게 되었거든요!

Uber: 진짜 괜히 대통령이 아니라니깐요.

Chip: [웃음] 그래가지고 일단 토블론에 대한 소원은 사용을 했고, 카르캣 엽서는 언제나 제 눈에 잘 보이는 곳에 두면서 집에 들어올때마다 미소를 띄우면서 있습니다.

Uber: 이제 카르캣 엽서 벽에 붙여놓고 아침에 일어날때마다 세번씩 절 해야죠.

Chip: 진짜 쟤만 보면 웃음밖에 안 나와요. 너무 행복해.

Uber: 진짜 저는 그때 캐나다에 있어가지고 보진 못했는데, 타임라인 보니까 장난 아니더라구요.

Chip: [한숨] 저 그때 트위터 라이브도 켰었잖아요. 모두가 기다리고 있었고, 갔는데 없다는 소식에 모두가 얼마나 허망했어요 다들. 진짜 저는… 와. 아니 이렇게 이벤트를 하면 안되지! 생각이 드는거에요.

Uber: 숨겨도 굳이 이렇게 문 닫는 공원에다 숨기는게 어디있어.

Chip: 그러니까. 어디 가게에, 카페같은데에 맞긴다고 하면 제가 진짜 들려서 갔을거에요, 회사에 늦더라도. 어쨌든 거기에 갔을거에요. 그게 아니다보니까 이런 사건이 발생 했던 것 같아요.

Uber: 그래도 확실히 엄청 나빠질 수도 있었는데 잘풀려서 다행이기도 해요.

Chip: 다들 고생한 걸 아니까 서로서로 돕고 살아야죠. [웃음]

Uber: 그리고 또 허씨랑 컨택 되는 분들이 연락을 주시면서…

Chip: 네네 맞아요.

Uber: 메세지 받았을때는 완전히 사라진 줄 알고 몰랐었던 상태. 그래서 한국에 더 보관하기 나은데 알려주겠냐 해가지고 북새통 만화같은데나 여러군데 알려주고. 확실히 지하철 보관함 같은데에 연애인들이 팬들 위해가지고 뭐 핫팩같은거 놓고 그러기도 하잖아요.

Chip: 그죠. 저희는 그런 팬덤 문화가 잘 활성화가 되어있기 때문에 오히려 그런데에 나뒀어도 괜찮다고 생각을 했었어요. 근데 아직 해외 분들은 국내의 이야기들을 정확하게 아는게 아니다 보니까 그런거에서는 조금 아쉬웠죠.

Uber: 뭐냐, 마지막에 허씨가 다들 홈스턱 한국 팬덤에서 잘 행동해줘서 고맙다고 인사도 보내고…

Chip: 아 진짜요?

Uber: 직접적으로는 아니고 제임스가 고맙다고 멘션을 전달 해줬던 것 같아요.

Chip: 어우! [웃음] 뿌듯하네!

Uber: 진짜 잘 풀리긴 했어요.

Chip: 맞아요. 다들 이야기 해서 잘 나눠 갖고, 가지고 가실 분들은 갖고 가고. 정말 이른 시간이었는데도… 아시죠, 한국인 빨리빨리.

Uber: 아 알죠 빨리빨리.

Chip: 제가 밤을 새서 간거였잖아요. 한 새벽 4시에서 5시 사이었을거에요. 택시 아저씨도 이 아가씨는 젊은 시간에 한강공원에 가서 뭐 할려나 했을거에요.

Uber: 어떤 트친분은 토블론 가지러 간다 하니까, 아침 일찍 어디 나가는거야? 한강. 왜!

Chip: [웃음] 큰일 나는 줄 알고! 정말 큰일 나는 줄 알고.

Uber: 근데 아니야, 다 홈스턱이야.

Chip: 다 오타쿠라서 그래. 다 오타쿠라서.

Uber: 다 오타쿠라서.

Chip: 저희는 이제 다 전투민족이잖아요. 그래서 전투적으로 갈 수밖에 없었어요.

Uber: 아침에 한강 가는 오타쿠가 어디있어.

Chip: 여기있어요!

Uber: 굿즈 받으러 한강 가는 오타쿠가 어디있어.

Chip: 한 24500원 내고 굿즈 받았다구요.

Uber: [웃음] 그래도 값지죠.

Chip: 값지죠. 저거는 솔직히 돈으로 환산 할 수가 없죠. 너무 좋아.

Uber: 한국에 대해서 좀 더 얘기를 해 봅시다. 한국 서브 컬쳐같은 경우에는 해외 북미쪽이랑 비슷한것도 있지만, 다른것도 있잖아요. 예를 들어가지고, 북미같은 경우에는 아니메 컨벤션같은거나 그런 컨벤션들이 크게 대규모로 열리고 그러잖아요. 부스도 있고. 저희도 그런게 있긴 하지만 뭐, 쩜오디 온리전이나 그런게 있긴 하지만, 좀 특별한게 온리전 같은 경우엔 팬들이 직접 열잖아요. 예를 들어가지고 뭐, 언더테일 온리전? 그때 저는 고삼이어가지고 가고싶었지만...

Chip: 아… 한국의 고삼 슬프다.

Uber: 근데 언더테일을 그렇게 열정적으로 파진 않아가지고 그냥 열리나 보다 하면서 미술 학원에 있었는데…

Chip: 토비 폭스가 왔죠.

Uber: 맞아요, 토비 폭스가 왔죠. [웃음]

Chip: 저도 깜짝 놀랐어요. 제가 좋아하는 작곡가분들 중 한명이라서, 저도 약간 부러웠습니다. 그때 저는 이제 첫 사회 생활 하면서 회사를 다니고 있었어가지고, 저도 그냥 와… 왔구나, 이정도였어요.

Uber: 확실히 부럽기도 부러운거였지만 토비가 한국에 대해서 알아주고 그런 것 만으로도 많이 고마웠었던 것 같아요.

Chip: 그런거에 고마움을 느끼는거죠. 여기에서도 열정적으로 좋아하는 사람들이 존재 한다.

Uber: 홈스턱 온리전도 열리면 좋긴 하지만, 아직 여러가지 이슈들이 있고, 온리전이 열리진 못하지만 그래도 덕톡회나 정모? 그런건 꾸준히 하고 있잖아요. 그런 문화들이 확실히 좋은 것 같아요. 약간 홈스턱 만의 특별한 분위기를 형성 하기도 하고.

Chip: 그죠. 그거에 대해서 제가 할말이 좀 많은데, 제가 주최 하는걸 되게 좋아하거든요. 사람들을 마주하고 대화 하는걸 너무 좋아해요. 그래서 2016년에 홈스턱 엔딩을 기념 해서 소규모 모임을 두 번정도 주최를 했었어요. 참가 하시는 분들 한테 오셨으니 수고하셨고 감사해서 선물 같은걸 한번씩 준비를 했었고, 어느 카페나 그런 곳을 대관을 해서 의견을 나누고 같이 좋아 하고 이야기를 나눌 수 있는 그런 기회를 마련 했었어요. 그 뒤에 저도 정말 현실에서 대학교를 다니고 바빠가지고 홈스턱에 신경을 못 쓰다가 최근에 다시 홈스턱에 열정을 쏟게 되었을때 여전히 한국은 굿즈 상업 판매에 대해서는 좋게 보지는 않죠, 분위기 자체가. 열렸다곤 하지만 활성화가 되어 있는것 같진 않잖아요.

Uber: 공식적으로 땅땅땅 하질 않았으니까 아직 약간 불안하고…

Chip: 오히려 공식이 말 하지 않는 것은 좀 꺼려하는 편이 있는 것 같아요. 그 이유도 있고. 약간 두렵다? 그래서 제가 이제… 저는 함가맨이잖아요. 한번 가자 하면 가는 사람이잖아요. 그래서 오랫동안 홈스턱을 좋아했던 분이랑 오랜만에 만나게 되어서 이야기를 나누다가 홈스턱 온리전이 열렸으면 좋겠다는 이야기가 나왔었어요. 근데 이제 온리전은 현실적으로 불가능 하니 그것보단 이제 행사 규모가 조금 더 작고 누구든지 참여할 수 있는 행사가 뭐였냐면 교류회에요. 그래서 홈스턱 교류회가 열렸으면 좋겠다 하다가 어? 여실래요? 어? 여실래요? 어! 열어요! 이렇게 된거에요.

Uber: 함가? 함가? 함가?

Chip: 함가! 이렇게 되는거죠. 그래가지고 이번 2020년 8월 1일에 한국에서 홈스턱 교류회가 열리게 돼요. 일정은 정해졌고 장소는 아직 8월이라 너무 먼 기간이라 대관은 되진 않지만 되는대로 공지를 올릴 예정이고 간단하게 설명을 하자면, 교류회는 판매가 아니라 참가자 수 만큼 자기 굿즈랑 회지나 그런 자기의 작업물들을 들고 와서 물물 교환 같은걸 하는 자리죠. 그걸 하고 읽고, 홈스턱에 대한 감상 같은걸 이야기를 나누고 이것도 약간 조그마한 모임 같은거죠.

Uber: 솔직히 말하자면, 뭐 회지 말고도 다른 굿즈들도 있긴 하지만 북클럽 느낌 나지 않아요?

Chip: 약간 그런거죠, 북클럽. 교양있네. 주제가 홈스턱이지만.

Uber: 홍차 내 오고, 비스켓 내 오고.

Chip: 홍차 준비 하도록 하겠습니다.

Uber: 홈스턱이니까 Faygo 가져오고.

Chip: [웃음] 여기서 Faygo를 구하기는 어려우니까 대신 환타로 대체를 해보도록 하겠습니다.

Uber: 환타랑 점액 파이.

Chip: 점액 파이요? 파이는 힘드니까 타르트로 준비를 해보도록 할게요.

Uber: 그 액괴 있잖아요. 그거로 대신 파이를 채우는거죠.

Chip: 큰일나요. 사람들 못 먹어요.

Uber: 진정성을 위해서.

Chip: 그래서 그걸 준비를 지금도 여전히 하고 있구요. 이제 8월에는 굿즈를 구비를 해야되잖아요. 그런 분들이 많은 편은 아니야. 안그래도 팬덤의 크기도 작기도 하고 그래서. 그런 분들이 아쉬워 하는 분들이 제 타임라인에 많이 보였어요. 그래서 아쉬워 하시니 12월에는 아이들 생일 파티 겸 덕톡회라는걸 열려고 하고 있어요. 이제 덕톡회는 교류회보단 조금 더 자유로운? 이것도 정모의 일종이니까. 만남의 장이고, 아이들 생일 축하해주고, 생일 케이크 먹고, 그러면서 자유롭게 이야기 하는 그런 자리를 마련 해보도록 하고 있어요.

Uber: 이런 식으로라도 한국 홈스턱 팬덤 분들이 오프라인으로 모여서 얘기를 하고 자기 관심사들을 나누는게 확실히 보기가 좋고, 그냥 재미있어요 전반적으로. 그냥 재미있어요. 얘기를 하는게.

Chip: 자기 생각은 이런데 이 분은 이렇게 생각하고 있었구나. 아 이렇게 생각 할 수도 있구나 해서 둘의 생각이 합쳐져서 또 새로운 답이 나온단 말이죠. 그게 너무 재미있죠. 전에 제가 정모를 두 번 열었을때도 반응이 굉장히 좋았었어요. 선물을 좋아 해주신것도 있었고, 그때의 감흥을 잊을 수가 없었어요. 이런 행사를 끊임없이 여는 것 같아요, 정말.

Uber: 한국의 온리전이나 교류회같은 경우에 굿즈에 대해서 한번 얘기를 나눠보자면 회지, 아니면 핀버튼, 아니면 에나멜 핀 같은 것도 직접 만드시는 분들도 있고.

Chip: 맞아요. 아크릴 키링, 스티커, 엽서는 기본인것 같구요 한국에서는. 그 것 뿐만이 아니라 최근에는 정말 다양하게 나와서 그립톡, 뭐 스마트폰을 사용하다보니까 그런 IT 계열의 악세사리를 제작 하는게 좀 많아지는 것 같구요.

Uber: 그래요. 전차스같은 것도 있고.

Chip: 저는 솔직히 굿즈를 LP판을 만들었잖아요. 이제 우버님께 선물로도 드렸고.

Uber: 그죠, 아 진짜. LP판 [쪽 소리] 음, 음!

Chip: [웃음] 그렇게 좋아해주셔서 저는 너무 행복하구요.

Uber: 근데 진짜 예뻐요. 진짜 예뻐요.

Chip: 저게 인테리어용이긴 한데,  그거 말고 저는 LP판 자체에 프린트 하는거로 제작을 했었지만, 그거 말고 이제 조금 더 그림의 크기를 줄여서 안쪽에만 프린트가 되는거면, 불량 LP판이어서 재생은 된다고 해요. 랜덤 노래가 나온다고 하더라구요. 그런거로도 조그마하게 다시 디자인을 해서 제작을 하면 굉장히 좋아 하시겠다라는 생각도 했고. 이제 LP판 말고도 LP판 커버도 같이 제작을 해서 드렸잖아요. 베타 버전만 제작을 했지만, 알파 버전도 도안은 있어서 완성만 시키면 언제든지 될 것 같고.

Uber: 돈만 있으면.

Chip: 응, 그리고 이제 아크릴 스탠드 같은거 예쁘게 전시 해놓고 정말 많은 것 같아요.

Uber: 참 굿즈같은것도 다양하게 만들 수 있는것도 있고, 한국 같은 경우에도. 그걸 이용해가지고 굉장히 크레이티브한 창작물들을 많이 만들어 내는 것 같아요, 한국 홈스턱 뿐만 아니라.

Chip: 아예 팬덤 문화 자체가 뭐, 아이돌 팬덤이라고 예를 들면, 아이돌을 주제로 정말 다양한 굿즈라는걸 만들어 내죠. 얼굴같은게 박힌 그릇같은걸 만들어 내기도 하고. 최근엔 코스터가 유행을 하잖아요. 저희도 레트로라는게 유행을 하면서 옛날 홍차같은거 차 마시고 그런 여유를 찾고싶어하는 사람들도 있다보니까 그런 류의 굿즈도 제작을 소량으로 제작할 수 있는 그런것들이 점점 전문화가 되어가고있고, 호텔 키링같은것도 예쁘니까 그냥 만들고, 조그마한 인형, 와펜, 정말 너무 다양한 굿즈를 제작할 수 있는 플랫폼이 존재하는 나라이기 때문에, 팬덤 문화가 발달 했으니까. 덕질을 하기에 정말 좋은 나라라고 저는 생각을 해요.

Uber: 회지같은 경우에도, 일러북 할때도 보드게임을 만들어가지고 오신분도 있었고. 제가 스타워즈를 좋아해서 스타워즈 온리전을 갔었거든요. 거기선 굿즈를 뭘 만드냐면, 신문지 이슈를 만들어가지고, 진짜 신문지에요, 근데 거기에 공식 캐릭터들이 나와서 인터뷰를 해가지고 뭐 소식같은거나 그런게 있고. 근데 또 테마가 코미디여가지고 웃기기도 하고, 이슈도 여러가지 있어요. 제가 갔을때는 이제 새로운 이슈랑, 예전 이슈들을 이제 같이 해서 동봉해서 팔기도 하고, 신기하더라구요.

Chip: 조금만 기다려보세요, 그것도 제가 이제 만들거거든요. 너무 좋아.

Uber: [웃음] 또 칩님한테 아이디어 준거야 내가?

Chip: 일단 기다려 보세요 준비를 해보도록 하겠습니다.

Uber: 그리고 온리전 가면 굿즈들을 다양하게 파는 것 같아요. 혹시 미애니 온리전 오셨었나요?

Chip: 저는 근데 그런 행사를 가려고 할때마다 일이 터져가지고 직접적으로 참가는 못하고 오히려 주최를 하는 편이죠.

Uber: 뭐 미애니 온리전 뿐만 아니긴 하지만 온리전 같은데 가면 등신대나 트레카같은것도 주최분들이 직접 만들어가지고 팔기도 하고.

Chip: 그걸 모으는게 진짜 기분이 좋죠. 트레카를 다 맞추고 혹시 뒤에 그림이 있는 경우에 그걸 다 종류별로 뒤집었을때 쾌감. 거기에 대한 상도 주잖아요.

Uber: 그죠. 온리전 같은 경우에는 부스 마감 하고 이벤트 같은걸 열기도 하고, 또 빙고 게임같은것도 있고, 추첨같은것도 있고.

Chip: 맞아요.

Uber: 추첨해가지고 공식 굿즈를 주거나 자체적으로 만든 굿즈를 주거나 하면서. 확실히 온리전 문화가 다양하고 다 각자 개성이 있어요.

Chip: 맞아요. 행사마다에도 만화나 주제에 대한 그런 특색있는 것들이 있다보니까 그래서 그 행사에 가고싶은 열망이 커지는것 같아요.

Uber: 또 스플래툰 온리전을 제가 가기도 했었거든요. 거기서는 부스들을 하면서 무대쪽에는 이벤트가 열리고 있는 중이에요. 다 각자, 스플래툰이니까, 스위치를 가져와서 전용 로비에 들어간 다음에 숨바꼭질을 하는거에요. 그래서 이기면 상품같은걸 얻고. 이것도 참 신박 하다 느끼기도 하고 참 신기한거 많았죠.

Chip: 아 그런 방법도 있구나. 저희의 행사에는 교류회다보니까 온리전 만큼 규모가 크지가 않아서 그러한 이벤트들을 이렇게 행사를 하듯이는 못해요. 하지만 이제 그 동안의 준비를 하면서 나중에 공지를 할거지만 굿즈를 준비 했을때 회지를 그리시는건 정말 오래 걸리는 일이잖아요, 책을 만들듯이. 그거에 대한 상품을 드린다던가 자잘한 이벤트? 이제 행사에서 바로 확인 할 수 있는 그런 자잘한 이벤트에 대해서 또 공지를 하고 그거에 대한 상품을 준비 할 예정이에요. 그래서 저도 여러가지 생각 하고 있는데 홈스턱 모의고사같은것도 생각 해보기도 했어요.

Uber: 그죠 그것도 재미 있죠.

Chip: 그걸 제작하는 저희의 머리가 터지겠지만… [웃음] 그래도 재미있을 것 같아요. 다들 이제 이게 틀렸어? 이게 맞았어? 하시면서 이야기를 하시겠죠.

Uber: 그리고 다 같이 채점하는 그런 재미도 있고.

Chip: 그죠. 재밌겠다.

Uber: 모의고사하니까 생각난게 제 첫 온리전. 칩님도 파시지만 닥터후 온리전에 갔었어든요.

Chip: 아!! 닥터후!

Uber: 참.. 딱 그때도 확실히 기억에 남았었던게, 제가 처음으로 서울로 올라간 것도 있고, 첫 온리전이기도 하니까. 그때 가서 어떤 강당같은 데에서 했거든요. 딱 들어서니까 그 this is Gallifrey.

Chip: 아!!!

Uber:  딱 그 노래가 나오는 거예요. 그 웅장함이 있잖아요. 그러면서 [노래따라부름] 이러는데 진짜 우와.. 대박이다.

Chip: 그걸 저도 생각은 하긴 했어요. 노래를 빵빵하게 틀어놓을 생각이기 때문에 다들 홈스턱 ost를 들으면서 저희 행사장에 들어오실거예요. [웃음] 너무 좋아!

Uber: [웃음] 그 문도 장식해가지고 홈스턱 , 스버브 문으로 해서.

Chip: 포스터 붙여놔야겠다.

Uber: [웃음] 참, 아이디어는 많은데 실현하기는 어려운.

Chip: 그쵸. 금전적인 것도 있고 시간적인 것도 있고. 이제 인력도 좀 적다 보니까 좀 힘든데 제가 정말 바라는 건, 뭐라할까.. 앤드류 허씨와 직접적으로 대화할 수 있는 기회가 생기게 된다면 여쭤보고 싶어요. 온리전을 열어도 되는가? 아니면 그 정도 규모의 행사를 기획을 해서 주회를 해도 되는가. 에 대해서. 만약에 그 것에 대해서 ‘yes’가 떨어진다면 충분히 열 의향이 있어요. 그만큼의 팬덤이 크지는 않아서 온리전급은 아니고, 배포전급이긴 하겠지만 조그만한 이벤트같은거 해두고 모두가 좋아하는 등신대 이벤트. 꼭 만들어 놓을 거고. 외국에서는 등신대 이벤트를… 그런게 있나요?

Uber: 외국의 그건 잘 모르겠네요. 제가 외국 컨벤션 같은 데 많이 가본 편은 아니라서 부스같은 경우에는 좀 있었던 거로 알고 있거든요.

Chip: 그 한국에서는 아이들의 키. 프로필이 나와있다고 치면 186cm다. 라고 하면 정말 그만큼의 족자봉을 만들죠.

Uber: 딱 1:1 스케일.

Chip: 맞아요. 그게 너무 좋아요. 그래서 저도 정말 그 족자봉을 너무 만들고 싶고, 보고 싶고, 제가 얻지는 못할 수도 있겠지만 만약에 카르켓 등신대 있으면 저는 바로 상한가를 외칠 거예요. 100만원!! 할 수도 있어요.

Uber: [웃음] 30만원이 제한입니다.

Chip: 아니 100만원.. 30만원으로는 안되는데.. 한 200만원은 줘야 하는데..

Uber: [웃음] 그냥 집 하나 팔아요.

Chip: 아 그럴까요? [웃음] 대출한번 받도록 하겠습니다.

Uber: [웃음] 참.. 또 온리전 좋은 점이 규모가 조정이 될 수도 있잖아요. 뭐, 밸브 온리전같은 경우에는 한.. 교실 하나 크기만 했어요. 온리전인데. 또, 미애니 온리전같은 경우에는 건물 층 2개를 빌려가지고 하고. 규모가 확실히 컸죠. 미애니 온리전같은 경우에는. 확실히 그런게 좋은 것 같아요. 팬덤이 크진 않아도 열릴 수 있는 그런 점이. 팬들이 기발해요.

Chip: 맞아요. 그 덕질을 위해서라면 뭐든 생각해내는 그들이 너무 자랑스럽습니다.

Uber: [웃음] 참 대통령같은 말투를..

Chip: [웃음] 아니, 저는 정말 진지하게 말을 한건데.

Uber: 홈스턱 팬덤 여러분 ..

Chip: [웃음] 세금 걷도록 하겠습니다.

Uber: [웃음] 홈스턱 프레지던트니까 세금 걷어야지.

Chip: 그럼요. 한국에서 세금을 걷고 있구요, 세금이 어디에 쓰이는 일단 나중에 보시면 압니다.

Uber: 세금을 돈으로 내는 대신에 카르켓 짤 1인 1짤.

Chip: 아, 충분합니다. 그거면 됩니다.

Uber: 아, 이제 팬덤이야기도 많이 하고 한국 팬들 이야기도 많이 하고. 좀 한번 홈스턱 공식. 큰 따옴표 공식이긴 하지만, 공식 이야기를 한 번 해볼까요. 아니면 하이브 스왑과 프렌드 심? 페스터 퀘스트, 뭐 여러가지 홈스턱 컨텐들이 요즘 계속 나오고 있잖아요.

Chip: 그쵸.

Uber: 프렌드 심을 시작으로 이루어진 홈스턱 르네상스. 그걸 기점으로 붐이 일어나고, 그리고 또 계속 컨텐츠들이 나오고 있는데 칩님은 이런 것에 대해서 어떻게 생각하는지. 또, 미래에 뭘 바랄까요. 홈스턱의 미래에 이야기를 해봅시다.

Chip: [웃음] 홈스턱2와 홈스턱 미래에 대하여. 되게 논문제목 같은데요.

Uber: [웃음]

Chip: 이제 제가 홈스턱에 다시 열중했을 때는 딱히 소식이 없었어요. 엔딩이 나고, 에필로그가 나와있던 상태였죠? 에필로그에 대한 반응을 서치를 해보니까  정말 좋은 반응은 아니였어요. 스토리가 좀 충격적이잖아요?

Uber: 그쵸. 해외팬덤에서도 좀 많이 갈리기도 했어요.

Chip: 그래서 저는 에필로그를 일부러 읽지는 않았는데 그러다가 페스터 퀘스트가 나온다는 소식이 탁. 나온거에요. 이제 저는, 나의 인생은 정말 홈스턱에 꼴아박겠구나.[웃음] 라는 생각이 들어서 그 때부터 예전에 같이 엔딩을 맞이했던 그 사람들이 조금씩 돌아오기 시작했어요. 저희와 같이.. 걸어왔던 아이들이잖아요. 자신의 학창시절과 힘들었던 때를 같이 보냈을 수도 있고요. 그래서 애정이 있던 아이들이 게임으로 만들어진다 하니까 원래 있던 아이들이.. 얼마나 기뻐요.진짜.

Uber: 좋죠.

Chip: 새로운 소식, 이야기도 있을거고.

Uber: 새로운 컨텐츠로 나오니까.

Chip: 너무 신나서 페스터 퀘스트에 대한 반응은 정말 굉장히 좋아요. 분위기도 너무 좋고, 아이들이 새롭게 한 명씩 업데이트될 때마다 저희도 장난 아니에요. 다들 막 뒤집어지고 난리가 아니에요 진짜. 근데 그러면서도 이번에 하이브스왑2가 나온다는 소식이 올라왔었잖아요.

Uber: 그쵸.

Chip: 하이브스왑에 대한 언급은 조금 적은 편이긴 했는데, 나온다고 하니 조이의 이모들이 점점 나왔죠. [웃음] 조이야! 이러면서 나왔죠. 그래서 그것에 대한 반응도 너무 좋아요. 정말로. 프렌드 심은 뭔가 이야기가 있었나? 갑자기 기억이 안나는데 프렌드 심은 나와있는 것에서 좋아하시는 분들이 좀 소수인 것 같긴 한데, 그래도 플레이 하셨던분들은 간간히  이야기를 나누면서 그래도 프렌드 심에 대한 이야기도 좋은 반응으로 나타나고 있는 것 같아요.

Uber: 그쵸.

Chip: 문제는 홈스턱2죠.

Uber: 크, 홈스턱2.

Chip: 홈스턱2에 대한 반응이 한국에서도 딱 둘로 나눠지는 것 같아요. 이 홈스턱2를 받아들이느냐, 못 받아들이느냐? 네. 저는 개인적으로 받아들이고 싶은 거에요.

Uber: 음.

Chip: 왜냐면  에필로그에서 이어져오는 내용이기 때문에 꽤나 힘든 내용이 많죠. 마음을 받아들이기에. 그래서 아이들이 마냥 행복하지만은 않은 모습과 내용들이 나오다 보니까 좀 힘들어하시는. 뉴비분들도 계시고 예전에 좋아했던 분들도 조금 그런 반응이 있었어요. 아, 이건 아닌 것 같다.라는. 이 내용을 받아 들이시는 분들은 얘네들은 충분히 이럴 수 있다라는 말도 나왔고, 저도 그것에 대해서 동의를 하구요. 충분히 그럴 수 있죠. 사람이 언제나 올바르게 그런 길만 갈 수는 없으니까. 그래서 그 홈스턱2를 적응 하느냐, 못 적응하느냐에 따라서 약간 나뉘는 것 같아요. 제 생각엔. 홈스턱2에 대한 반응은 조금 이슈가 있다라고밖에 표현을 못 할 것 같아요. 언제나 나올때마다 이슈가 있다.

Uber: 그쵸.

Chip: 홈스턱2 이야기를 나누면 좀 시끌벅적해지긴 해요.

Uber: 그쵸.그쵸. 좀 확실히 홈스턱2나 에필로그나 이게 모두에게 다 맞을 수는 없는 그런 작품들인 것 같아요. 약간 사람들이 꺼려할 만한 그런 소재들을 다루기도 하고. 그래서 에필로그같은 경우에는 앞에 콘텐츠 워닝같은 거를 달아놓기도 하고 해서 미리 읽을 사람들은 읽고 아니면 아니고. 왜냐면 또 선택적 캐논이잖아요. 선택적 공식이니까. 캐논이라는게 복수형이고. 복수형을 받아들여야 하는거고. 그래서 이 아이들의 이야기가 액트7이나 아니면 크레딧에서 멈추길 바란다는. 그거로 끝하고 그대로 컨텐츠를 소비해도 되는 부분이기도 하고. 그런 부분에 대해서 말이 확실히 많긴 한데 저는 많이 긍정적으로 생각하려고 하는 편이에요. 홈스턱2 아니면 에필로그. 에필로그가 많이 충격적이기는 했지만 생각을 해보면 저는 에필로그가 홈스턱이 수거하지 않은 떡밥들을 수거하면서 매듭을 짓길 바랬거든요.

Chip: 음.

Uber: 종점을 매기는. 그러지 않아서 그런 부분에 좀 별로긴 했는데 그래도 생각을  해보니까 컨텐츠 자체로는 굉장히 좋고, 또 홈스턱2가 나오고. 그렇게 보니까 어느정도 시간을 들여보니까 괜찮아지는 것 같더라고요.

Chip: 이게 정말 시간문제라고 생각해요. 적응을 하고 싶은데, 씹고 있는 와중에 목넘기기까지가 힘든거죠. 저도 정말 며칠 전까지만 해도 그런 상태였거든요. 그래서 마음이 되게 심란했었어요. 이 홈스턱2를 사랑은 하지만 이게 진짜 사랑하는건가? 라는 생각이 좀 들더라구요 저는. 그래서 저는 우버님과의 대화도 있었고, 어쨌든 지금은 계속 수용하고 있는 단계에요. 이런 내용이 앞으로 계속 나올거고, 이 아이들이 예전에는 청소년이였는데 지금은 어른이 되었잖아요.

Uber: 그쵸.

Chip: 어른이 되어서 사회활동을 하는데 마냥 좋지만은 않고, 저희 인생도 솔직히 그렇잖아요? 맨날 좋은 일만 생길 수도 없고 행복할 수만은 없으니까.

Uber: 음.

Chip: 그래서 그 아이들도 똑같은 것 같아요. 대신 규모가 조금 다를 뿐이지. 그래서 지금 홈스턱2을 좋게 보려고 하고 있고, 다시 돌아와서 에필로그의 소식을 접한 분들이나 홈스턱2를 보면서 방황하고 있는 분들이 있어요. 아, 이게 뭐지. 어, 이게 뭐지. 근데 그것도 시간문제일 것 같아요. 시간이 지나면 이걸 정말 받아들이느냐 아니면 난 이건 안되겠다. 액트7, 크레딧까지 이 아이들의 이야기가 거기에서 끝난다고 생각한다. 그러면 그렇게 좋아하면 되는 거고.

Uber: 그렇죠.

Chip: 분위기는 지금 엄청 나빠지는 상태는 아닌 것 같아요. 다들 그냥.. 마음아파하는 상태.

Uber: 다들 시간이 필요한.

Chip: 시간이 필요하고 아이들을 너무나 애정하기 때문에 좀 슬퍼하죠. 안타까워하고.

Uber: 그쵸. 홈스턱이 이런거죠. 홈스턱이 전 애인인거고 헤어졌는데 다시 돌아오려고 하니까 나 너 보니까 좀 안 좋은 기억이 생각나가지고 안될 것 같애. 너와 보낸 시간은 즐거웠지만 그래도 좀 이상했어.

Chip: [웃음] 아, 맞아맞아. 그런 느낌도 있다. 좋아하던 캐릭터들의 새로운 모습이 나오는데. 그 이야기도 들렸어요. 쟤 보니까 진짜 전 애인 인스타보는 것 같다.

Uber: [웃음]

Chip: 내가 없어도 잘 지내고 있는 것 같구나. 이런 느낌으로?

Uber: 참.. 확실히 홈스턱2나 홈스턱 에필로그나 원래 홈스턱보다 분위기가 다르기도 하고 진지하고 약간.. 그런 성숙한 주제들을 다루고 있잖아요. 그런걸 다루면서 왜 굳이? 위안을 찾으러왔는데 현실적인 문제를 마주해야하나? 그런 분들이 있고. 그런 분들이.. 정당화 되죠. 즐거움을  찾으러 온 사람들도 있고. 요즘 세상 돌아가는 꼴을 보면 제가 열불이 안날 수가 없어요.

Chip: [웃음] 그런 반응이 한국에서는 오래된 팬들에게 많이보여요. 굳이? 라는. 하지만 뉴비는 어어.. 이런느낌 조금 더 강하죠.

Uber: 그쵸. 굳이? 그런 느낌도 있지만 또, 그런 현실적인 주제, 우울증 같은 주제를 다루면서 그런 부분에서 위안을 찾는 사람도 꽤 있더라구요. 내가 혼자가 아니다. 약간 공감대같은게 형성되는 분위기가 있더라구요.

Chip: 아, 그렇게 생각 할 수도 있겠다.

Uber: 그쵸. 생각하기 좋은 주제라고 생각해요.

Chip: 그럴 것 같아요. 젠더의 대한 이야기같은 묘사도 나오고. 그래서 저는 그런 소재같은거 굉장히 좋다고 생각해요. 그런게 아니라 뭐라해야할까. 홈스턱 자체에 대한 걸 못 받아 들인다는거지, 그런 소재들을 이야기로 잘 풀어내는 건 좋다고 생각해요.

Uber: 그쵸. 이상한 사람들이 개연성이 없다고는 해도 가시화는 가시화고, 사회가 소수자들을 바라보는 시선이 나아질 수 있다는. 그럼 왜 굳이 안 할 필요가 있겠냐, 그런거죠.

Chip: 그쵸.

Uber: 우스갯소리로 소비하지 않거나 비난하지 않는 한에서 가시화는 가시화고 소수자들에 대한 이야기를 쓰는게 확실히 저는 좋다고 생각해요.

Chip: 네, 정말 많이 바뀐 것 같아요. 홈스턱1은 정말 창작물이라는 느낌이 굉장히 강했잖아요. 비현실적이니까. 홈스턱2는 캐논에서 나왔던 애들이, 그 아이들이 사회를 살면서 진짜 현실을 보여주고 있는 것 같아요. 저희는 힘듦의 도피처로 생각하긴 했지만 어쨋든 이 아이들도 그 사회를 살아가고 있고, 그러한 문제를 직면하고 있고. 그래서 저는 정말 좋다고 생각 해요. 약간 힘들 뿐이지.

Uber: 홈스턱2..홈스턱 미래..이제 어디로 가야하는지.한 번 쭉 보고 그리고 마음의 준비를 단단히 하는게.

Chip: 그냥 그 아이들이 어디로 가서 어떠한 결론을 맺는지 저희가 손 댈수 없는 것이잖아요. 제 인생도 어떻게 해야할 지 모르겠는데. 그래서 그냥 지켜보고 잘 되면 축하해주는 거고, 안 되면 응원해주면 될 것 같아요.

Uber: 그쵸. 참 좋은 말이네요. 잘 되면 축하해주고, 안 되면 응원해주고.

Uber: 딱 그거죠. [웃음] 둘다 게임 과니까 알긴 하지만, 게임개발하는게 쉽진 않잖아요.

Chip: 정말 힘들죠.

Uber: [웃음] 제가 작년 4월 13일에 장난으로 컨텐츠 유출? 약간 그런거 사진 만들어서 올렸었거든요. 그래서 그 중에서 하나가 바드퀘스트 리메이크로. 다른거는 하이브스왑 wii-u 포트. 근데 이미 스위치 나온 상태 있거든요. 그래서 굳이 wii-u로? 근데 진짜 믿는 사람들이 있어요.

Chip: 그 때 랜덤박스 있었잖아요. 박스 안에 존 그려져 있고. 저도 그거 샀었거든요. [한숨] 그런게 한 번 더 있었으면 좋겠어요. 왜냐면 2020잖아요? 특별한 년이라구요.

Uber: 특별하게.

Chip: 그런 랜덤박스가 한번 더 나왔으면 좋겠다라는 생각이 드는데, 최근에 홈스턱 굿즈 그런 쪽을 보면 해외는 아무래도 그런게 활성화가 잘 안되어있다보니까, 제가 개인적으로 느끼기에는 조금 단조로워요.

Uber: 음.

Chip: 틀에 맞춰서 그림만 바뀌는 거니까?

Uber: 그쵸.

Chip: 그래서 아쉽기도 해서 이번 4월 13일에 세일을 해주면 살거는 사고 그러겠지만 조금 더 다양한 굿즈가 나왔으면 좋겠다는 점? 그런걸 기대해보고 있어요.

Uber: 공식 굿즈.

Chip: 네.

Uber: 팬들도 각자 개인 굿즈를 만들긴 하는데 공식에 내주면 느낌이 다르죠.

Chip: 그쵸. 저도 그래서 정말 열심히 굿즈를 만들고 있잖아요. 다양한게 나왔으면 좋겠다해서.

Uber: 뭐, 공식이라 해가지고, 더 퀄리티가 좋네. 아니면 어떤 부분이 더 좋다 막 그런건 아니지만 그래도 그 feel이 있잖아요. feel.

Chip: 맞아요, 그 택이 붙는다구요. 택이.

Uber: 맞아요. [웃음]

Chip: 그 택이 중요한거라구요. 택.

Uber: [웃음]택.딱 그거.

Chip: 택.그게 중요한거지, 정말 퀄리티에 높낮이를 따지는게 아니라, 공식이니까 좋은거다. 공식이 내준거면 일단 사고본다. 그게 진짜 제 마인드거든요. 그래서 저 에필로그 책도 나오자마자 샀어요. 일단 내주니까 샀죠. 소중하니까. 홈스턱 책도 지금까지 나온 것 까지 해서 싹 몰아서 다 샀어요.

Uber: [웃음] 진짜,

Chip: flex해버렸죠.

Uber: flex.

Chip: flex해버렸죠. 그래서 그거는 기다리고 있는데 저는 이제 공식한테 바라는 점은  다양한 굿즈. 좀 그럴 때가 됐어요.

Uber: 이제 따른 토픽으로 넘어가가지고, 토픽전환 참 이상하긴 한데.[웃음]

Chip: [웃음] 하지만 어쩔 수 없어요. 저희는 처음이니까.

Uber: 다른 이야기합시다. 다른 이야기!

Chip: 좋아요!

Uber: [웃음] 홈스턱 한국더빙. 저희가 이제 한 번 해보려고 했었다가 사람이 안모여가지고. 공식적으로 모이진 않았지만, 아무튼 없는 걸 저희가 알았기 때문에 일단 보류되어 있는 프로젝트 중에 하나.

Chip: 그쵸. 보류죠. 한국더빙 이거 정말 진-심으로 하고 싶어요. 왜냐하면 렛츠리드홈스턱을 찾아보면 영상이 정말 많잖아요. 아무래도 스크립트가 많으니까.

Uber: 그쵸.

Chip: 근데 있는 건 좋아요. 아이들의 목소리가 헉. 이런 겠거니. 생각되고 좋아요.근데 영어에요, 어쨌든.

Uber: [웃음]

Chip: 저희는 못알아들어요.

Uber: 저는 알아들을 수 있어요. 칩님만 못알아 듣는거야.

Chip: 조용히 하세요. 저는 못알아 들으니까.

Uber: [웃음]

Chip: [웃음] 대통령이 못알아 들으면 모두가 못알아 듣는 거에요. 그래서 그 목소리만 듣게 되요. 스크립트는 간단한 문법은 이러겠구나 하는데, 긴 내용이나, 로즈나 카나야 그런 대화로 가면 스읍. 이게 뭔가 싶죠. 그래서 한국 더빙이 이야기가 나오면 반응은 좋아요.

Uber: 음.

Chip: 반응은 좋은데, 사람이 없어요. 그게 문제니까..

Uber: 팬덤이 작으니까.

Chip: 네. 그래서 저 정말 한국으로 렛츠리드 홈스턱이 아니라 홈스턱 읽자! 이거겠죠.

Uber: 그쵸, 홈스턱 읽자.

Chip: 그게 좀 활성화가 됐으면 좋겠어요. 한국에서 진행한다 하면 꽤나 해외에서도 관심이 올 것 같거든요. 반응을 보니까? 다른 언어에도 조금씩 관심을 주시면서, 한국과의 교류도 굉장히 많아지지 않을까. 라는 생각도 드는데. 정말 아쉬운건 팬덤의 크기가 작아서 인력이 없다는게.

Uber: 더빙도 그렇고 외국의 컨텐츠를 한국어로 바꾸면서. 참 재밌거든요 그리고.
또, 거기 안에서도 창작능력이 보이기도 하고.

Chip: 그쵸. 재밌어요.

Uber: 재밌죠. 기발하고. 근데 진짜 사람이 문제에요 사람이.[웃음] 사람이 문제다.

Chip: 아니야, [웃음] 아니야.

Uber: 사람이 없어서 그래.

Chip: 사람이 정말 없기도 하고, 만약에 진행을 한다고 치면 인당 3-4명은 맡아야될 것 같아요.

Uber: 그니까요. 목소리 계속 바꿔가면서.

Chip: 그걸 어떻게 해요. 저희가 전문 성우도 아닌데.

Uber: 그니까요.

Chip: 근데 만약에 하게 되면 저는 한번 제이드를 해보고 싶었어요. 목소리 톤도 비슷비슷할 것 같고.

Uber: 제이드 잘 어울릴 것 같애.

Chip: 헤헤헤히히 [웃음]

Uber: 히히히히

Chip: [웃음] 그래서 정말 아쉽네요.

Uber: 옛날에도 이런 이야기 나오긴 했었지만 더빙 이야기 하면서 가끔씩 녹음해서 클립 올리는 분들이 있는데 그걸 보면 진짜 잘 어울리기도 하고, 잘하셔요 또.

Chip: 맞아요. 잘해.

Uber: 응.

Chip: 이렇게 딱 하면 되는데, 사람들의, 각자의 삶이 있기 때문에.

Uber: 그쵸.

Chip: 그것도 맞추는 게 참 어렵죠. 아쉽네요.

Uber: 또 뭐, 방법이 있겠죠 근데.

Chip: 네. 그냥 각자 마감만. 날짜만 정해놓고 녹음해서 이 날까지 보내주세요. 하면 되니까.

Uber: 그쵸그쵸. 아쉽지만, 그래도 언젠가 어떤 형태로든 다시 언젠가 부활할  기회가 있길 바라며.

Chip: 그렇죠. 제가 언젠가 부활 시킬겁니다. 말을 계속 꺼낼거거든요.[웃음]

Uber: [웃음] 좋아요.

Chip: 네.
